Today started out great I was all prepared to write a nice story about two police officers who risked their lives and drive a potential bomb out of Times Square today but before I could even get happy what seems like another terror attack took place in Germany. So as not to let them win and dominate all the headlines lets atleast discuss a little bit about the police officers in NY. One of the officers was an immigrant from Afghanistan, so Trump not all immigrants are bad, and became a police officer and when the time came to save innocent lives and risk his own, he did. I am sure there are many stories everyday about heroes like him, either police officers, military personnel or just generally people doing good things everyday; however, its always overshadowed by something horrible or scary. I once joked that I wanted to start a rival news network to CNN called GNO or Good New Only but I was constantly reminded that tragedy sells and heart warming good stories get boring and are for Disney movies. While I do not agree with this 100% there is certainty truth to it and is why we keep hearing of all the bad in the world and very little of the good even with so much information. In fact, even the Good News Network or http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org top stories are actually not that inspiring or interesting; rather a play on generally bad things. To give a few examples from today’s headlines on their site:
- Pakistan on Brink of Approving Law Against Honor Killings (are you kidding me, one of the US’s top allies in the war on terror is celebrating maybe getting rid of killing women for no real reason.)
- Cops Pay Restaurant Bill for Couple who Refused to Sit Next to Them (This is just awful, people would not sit next to cops, like they are all the same, and come on people that’s just crazy and some-sort of crazy prejudice I cannot even name)
- New Photos of Prince George’s Third Birthday Celebrates the Future King (LOOK) (really that is the best you could do to try and make me feel good.
So even a site that is supposed to be good news is really just spinning bad stories, I do not know what is worse. How was their headline not at least about the two officers who risked their lives two days ago, is that not interesting enough. I am getting very worried that we are really starting to live in a Gogolian nightmare, so much so that Trump’s acceptance speech was all doom and gloom. So to sum it up, things suck, people keep just randomly killing other people and even the Good News Network cannot truly report good news. NO, I say. We have to do better, we have to try harder and find the good and bright things in life once in awhile and focus our collective energy on turning the tide so we can have actual good news and destroy the fear and hate mongers who seem to be always dominating everything I read. I am not some sort of crazy idealist or even a genuine pacifist I am just sick of stupid people doing stupid horrible things and then creating an army of more stupid and horrible people yelling at them and creating more fear and more hatred and spinning into a crazy horrible cycle. Please if anyone ever does read this, begin posting truly good stories and maybe we can start a trend.
Recent events of two black people being shot by police and subsequent riots and have really started to highlight again a fundamental problem this country has and I believe is directly linked to someone like Trump being able to enter politics and tap into peoples’ hatred and use it to try and get elected.
Let me try and explain this thought more thoroughly:
Police make mistakes; however when they make a mistake its life and death and sometimes cannot be taken back. Its a terrible position to be in and when in a rough neighborhood they are more likely to react with deadly force than a non-violent community. I am carefully using the word community over race for a reason. An area that a high crime rate is going to put police more on alert that is just human nature, that’s not an excuse just a fact. Going into a situation where the area is tough and seeing a gun these officers used deadly force. Did they use it correctly or incorrectly I have no idea. Did race play a part in their use of deadly force, maybe, but class played as critical a role as anything else. The inherent problem is class and race get confused all the time because of the disproportionate amount of black people who live below the poverty line compared with whites. For instance, according to one government survey 27.4 percent of black people live in poverty compared to only 9.9 percent for whites. Now how this situation occurred and is continuing to occur is clearly a result of a perpetual cycle that white america created. How we get out of it and what we do about it has volumes of books written about it and is not something that can be easily tackled but if anyone does eventually read anything I write I would encourage all ideas. But back to the main point. The class situation is such that the areas of highest violence have the highest concentration of minorities (black and Hispanic) being the most prevalent. Now an officer makes a mistake with deadly and tragic consequences in these areas is that racially motivated or based more on class. I do not have the answer as I do not know every police officer but I do believe that fighting back and forth between minorities and police is a futile exercise. Both are neither wrong nor right; however, because of the abject poverty of many of these communities and a complete lack of giving a shit by the majority of american people whom else do these communities demonstrate against. What we really need is true leadership for fundamental change of the entire environment to make the areas safer for its citizens and for the police to protect the community through higher standards of living. It continually makes me angry to here people blame one side or the other as both are actually fighting against the same thing, dangerous areas creating by poverty from decades of racist crap. We as a society need to get together and figure a way to offer all american people the same opportunities and make a difference in their communities. Enough fighting among ourselves and more education and fighting the inherent racists who truly suppress the growth and integration of minorities in our country.
I do not really know why I am writing this accept for the fact that it seems someone does need to start writing about this, although I am sure I could find many articles if I searched enough but alas that cannot stop me, so here goes:
I woke up today to find out about the UK’s decision to exit the EU. While in and of itself I was not truly informed as to which side or do I truly care which way the vote went it hammered home one point which is truly scary. People are buying into racist, hate driven messages on a global scale that we haven’t seen since Hitler and no one seems to notice or at least not enough people are talking about. The reason this vote just continued to hammer it home is look at how it was won and what different people around the world are saying. Its all about hate and isolationist policy. Does no one remember what happened after WWI and what happens when you have isolation. I am not saying you need the EU, or this political party is right or wrong all I am saying is stop blaming entire groups of people for your problems. It seems to simple to do, take some responsibility for yourself, don’t blame everything on other people and do not hate other people based on color, religion or anything else. Is it that hard to do? The amazing (and truly sad) part of what we are seeing is that no matter how much information we now have access to or the social media overload, people can so easily get wrapped up in anger and frustration. As stupid as this might sound it is very simplified in Star Wars movies. The dark side is alluring, meaning its very alluring to be told that all your problems and what is wrong in the world is this person’s fault and if we just eliminate them we will be fine. No, that is not true. Genocide occurs with hatred and no one is better off when millions of people are killed for hate. I am still having trouble grasping these events and will continue to post about it for my own sanity but should anyone find these posts I hope they simplify to the most basic level what is going on in the world and how we need to get people to see it and to spot it from taking over.
